Preserving the 100-year-old mission to provide space and support for the Chestnut Hill non-profit community.
“Community helping community”
For the past century, the Chestnut Hill Community Centre Corporation, within the Woodward Community Centre building, has been conscientiously and quietly accommodating the needs of the non-profit community in the building given by Gertrude Houston Woodward for that purpose. The Chestnut Hill Community Centre is an independent non-profit (501c3) corporation not affiliated with any other organization.
Founded as a National League for Women's Services Branch, CHCC has served many volunteer efforts starting with the needs of World War I troops and their families.
“Community House is, in some measure, answering the age-old question: who is thy neighbor?”
— Gertrude H. Woodward, 1917
For the mission to be successful and thrive in the 21st century, the Woodward Community Centre must undergo a major renovation. The goal is to create a diverse, inclusive space for non-profits with varied purposes and needs where they exchange ideas, develop mutually beneficial relationships, share services and enhance their respective missions, thus benefitting the overall community vitality.
Our campaign to restore the health of the Woodward Community Centre will both restore a historically certified 200 year-old building, and ensure the 100-year-old vision to serve the non-profit needs of the Chestnut Hill Community.
By making the Centre energy-efficient, bringing the building up to code, and transforming it into a state-of-the-art facility, the Centre will become a financially and structurally sustainable resource for the Chestnut Hill community.
“An interesting model of leveraging an earned-income opportunity — and financially self-supporting — toward the preservation of a historically-certified building to host community-serving, non-profit organizations.”
